A three part action plan has been proposed to create a self-regulated space where surfing can take place while limiting contact and interaction with the environment. In order to achieve the implementation of regulations required by various Governments and the health advisory systems, surfers need to be consciously implementing social distancing and the recommended protocol measures.
We look to our professionals in various fields for advisory measure on how to safely go about our waterborne activities. We are open to advice in creating a sustainable environment for activities to take place while being conscious of the Protocols needed during this pandemic.
In considering the implementation and use of Protocols we have consulted the people around us first. Ethical considerations are to form a baseline in terms of the sharing of information and the use of data to form the needed Protocol measures. Open and inclusive public engagement is the foundation for this.
The use of Technology fundamentally changes how effectively we are able to implement Protocols and then monitor their effectiveness. Monitoring data and the ever changing direction of the challenges we face in the world determines the speed of our response.

The protocols being implemented worldwide and relating to the current COVID-19 pandemic are guidelines, measures and procedures formed by medical bodies, councils, and scientific research and study. It is advised that you consult directly with your Government or representative Council or Association before implementing any COVID-19 protocols. There are many legal implications if you implement measures that are not uniformly accepted worldwide. Currently the main reference point for all COVID-19 protocols is the World Health Organization - https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019
Please seek legal assistance and oversight when developing or implementing any protocol measures.
This site and all related sites DO NOT in any way or form develop protocols and all protocols listed on the site are guidelines only, by the relevant representative organisation. This site is a Public Benefit page with the aim of studying the impact of COVID-19 on Tourism in South Africa.
While implementing various protocols we need to take into consideration the balance between the lives and health of the public and the needs of industry to keep those lives furnished and productive. The situation is not a matter of choice of one over the other but more about the sustainability of the approach. Sanitizing our environment in order to temporarily keep people safe is not a long term solution. Considering the environmental impact of disposable masks is just as much a protocol implementation concern as the actual need for masks in the workplace.
If you are a surfer or a stakeholder in the surfing industry please complete the survey above. It takes about 5 minutes and your input is vital in assisting the surfing industry and surf related activities to legally open again. Youth Tourism South Africa partnered with the Department of Tourism and Events at CPUT, an Academic Institution who assists with the compilation of surveys and academic report writing to generate valuable empirical statistics. YTSA is investing in the development of Protocol sites and has partially fronted the costs.
The partners and participants on this site have contributed their time, resources and monetary donations in order to keep the project free and accessible to all stakeholders. The SnapScan QR code is the YTSA donation point that keeps these projects afloat. As a donating member you may add your photo, logo or Association/Guild/Organisation/Council Partnership logo to the site - the donation amount determines the exposure level you may receive.
If you would like to be part of the development process then please feel free to donate. Thank you for your participation.
